Bali Bandits Exclusive Mix

Bali Bandits Exclusive Mix

Dutch duo Bali Bandits are off to a fast start in 2018. They’ve been pumping out releases filled with their signature sound from “2 Supermodels,” to the massive Bassjackers collaboration “Are You Randy,” and most recently “Voulez Vous.” Out now on Musical Freedom, the track has become a staple in the live sets of artists like Galantis and Zedd. To celebrate the massive release, we caught up with Jan and Jordi and got an Exclusive Mix filled with all of their favorite selections!

How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how does the track selection compare to your live sets at the moment?
First of all, it always takes us a pretty long to come to a final selection because we're very picky (maybe even too picky). We like tracks that are unique, fresh and fun and we don't necessarily like the 'yet another festival banger' tracks. So most of the time it basically comes down to a mix containing only Bali Bandits tracks – haha, no joke! We're really into almost all of the French house music out there and disco vibes get us dancing as well.

Can you highlight three tracks included in your Exclusive Mix and why they stand out to you?
Bingo Players – “Everybody” is definitely our favorite track at the moment. Super feel good, really like the vibe for the track. We're currently talking to Bingo Players about doing a song together as well. We've been loving their music ever since “Cry Just A Little” and “Rattle” back in the day, so that would be really cool!

Besides that we think Blinders – “Okami” and CID – “Werk” are pretty cool songs because of their simplicity and uniqueness.

“Voulez Vous” is an absolutely huge track and it looks like it has quite a history! We’ve got a first play noted from ADE 2016, and it looked to have become a fixture in Zedd & Galantis’ live sets. What can you tell us about the evolution of the track to the version that was released on Musical Freedom?
Haha well the version that got released was pretty much the same version as the late 2016 version. But indeed a lot of things happened and didn't happen with “Voulez Vous.” At first we waited a bit to sign the track. At that point we were talking to some record labels about maybe signing a deal, so we wanted to see where things were heading with that before we would sign the track. We did send it to some of our DJ friends to play live and one of them instantly fell in love with the track and asked if we could release it as a collaboration. We were pretty excited about that so we decided to go for it. But unfortunately it turned out that the collaborating artist had very little time to work on the record because of his busy schedule. After about 6 months we mutually agreed that it would be best to release the record as just a Bali Bandits record since the artist just couldn't guarantee that he would find time to give his twist to the song in the near future.

At that point we didn't really know what to do with the track, but then Tiësto and his Musical Freedom team came to the rescue and asked about new tracks to sign and the Zedd & Galantis ID in particular. So we didn't hesitate a single second and signed the record and we can say we were super stoked about finally finding a home for the track!

What’s your favorite element in the track and why?
Jordi: I really like the French vibe to the track. We both love French house and wanted to make a modern day French twisted bouncey track. So we implemented some Daft Punk-ish arps, filter stuff and of course the French Mademoiselle with the smooth vocal.

Jan: The trumpet.

Your previous release on Musical Freedom, “Are You Randy” together with Bassjackers, was a smash hit as well! What was it like working with Marlon and Ralph? Can you talk us through the progression of the collaboration?
We made a drop and some chord progressions for “Are You Randy” a while back but didn't have the right breakdown and vibe for the song. We’ve known Ralph & Marlon for a while now (our first ever show was opening for Bassjackers back in 2014) and thought it would be cool to finish the track with them. They really liked the idea and after some back and forth editing we finalized the track together in the studio. They're super nice guys and the track is doing really well!

What do you guys like about working with the Musical Freedom team and what has the continued support of Tiësto meant to you guys?
They are the nicest! Besides releasing our music, they are really helpful with content ideas like interviews, video clips, various social media input, etc. They are really putting in effort from their side too to promote the record in the best way possible. Of course if we said otherwise we wouldn’t release another record with Musical Freedom, so got to be careful, haha. Also Tiësto's support means a lot! Our fanbase started growing rapidly ever since we started working with him and his label. Funniest thing so far is when they gave us free MF snapbacks, which were too small for our heads unfortunately.

All of your tracks are racking up massive DJ support, so what do you think makes your tracks so accessible to other artists?
We think the fact that they are pretty melodic combined with interesting and kind of weird sounds makes them stand out compared to a lot of other records. We always hear that people are able to distinguish our tracks from others in a second. Definitely a good thing we think!

If you could pick one artist to collaborate with at the moment, who would it be and why?
Ed Sheeran or Drake. Or both. Their records immediately hit the number one spot on every platform as soon as they are released. Would be fun to see our name out there as well. Bali Bandits & Ed Sheeran – “1001 La La La's” (feat. Drake) looks like a total hit record. Besides producing the song we'll be singing on that record for sure. The four of us in perfect harmony with a lot of autotune streaming 5M a day on Spotify, nice.

As we shift our focus towards the oncoming summer season, how are things shaping up for you guys?
We've got some cool shows and records coming up. We're playing Zimbabwe and Dortmund in the first week of May, super excited for those shows! Other shows aren't announced yet but make sure to keep an eye out if you want to see us live. As for songs there will be some exploration of different genres. We recently made a lot of different styles, varying from moombahton to more poppy stuff. Really curious about the reactions on those records.
