1001Tracklists Spotlight: Costel van Dein
Today one of Darklight Recordings' key artists, Costel van Dein, takes over Spotlight Mix duties. The talented Ukrainian DJ/producer has impressed on Fedde Le Grand’s label with tracks like “Speaker From The Jungle,” “Everybody Knows,” and most recently his latest release “W&B.” To celebrate he’s taken us inside his record box for a pumping sixty minutes, and shares insight into his new music, relationship with Fedde, and much more!
Costel, thanks so much for joining us today to celebrate your new release “W&B”! We’re so excited to share your Spotlight Mix today and take a closer look at your bright future! Could you start out by talking a bit about your background in DJing and music production?
The story started for me when I was 15. I saw a DJ on stage for the very first time and knew that I wanted to do the same thing. From that moment on I started to take my first steps as a DJ and then tried to produce my first tunes.
What have been some of the defining moments in the Costel van Dein project?
I started out as a trance DJ. So I think that the moment when I realised that trance is not the music that I really wanted to work with was the most defining.
What are the sounds Costel van Dein stands for today?
The most important thing for me is groove. So that is the primary fundamental, and other sounds just add on top of that. I’m always searching for the groove.
Tell us some more about “W&B” – how did you move from the initial sketch to the final production that we hear today?
I was inspired by old school bass house. When the idea was done, I decided to add some vibes from my tune “Speaker From The Jungle” which you can hear in some parts on the drops. Again, it’s all about the groove.
You’re back on Darklight for the release, where you’ve found a great home. What do you like most about working with Fedde Le Grand, his label and releasing on Darklight?
Fedde is a great person. He likes my music and it motivates me a lot. Our tastes are similar in some ways. It doesn’t matter how busy he is, he always finds a moment to reply to me about a new demo or something else. I appreciate that a lot.
Can you pick another of your releases on Darklight and tell us what makes that release special to you?
I was madly inspired when Fedde played my tune for the very first time. It was at Bootshaus and the tune was called “Give Me Down.” On that wave of inspiration I started to make “Speaker From The Jungle” which was done in a few hours. It’s a really special piece of work for me that I’m really proud of. Because in that moment I understood that support and people believing in you can make you a monster!
Talk us through a day in your life at the moment. How have you been using your extra time at home?
Studio, workouts and computer games. Working hard 24/7 to get closer to my goals as fast as I can.
Looking closer at your Spotlight Mix, what were three stand out tracks or artists included in the set and why?
It’s just the music that I like to play in my gigs, streams, etc. It’s hard to pick a specific producer. They all are making such cool music.
And as we look ahead, what is coming on the immediate horizon for you?
I think that you can expect a lot of new releases from me. Among which there may be one very special collab with Mr. Darklight himself!
