Nicky Romero Celebrates 5 Years Of Protocol
Wrapping up our 5 Years of Protocol celebration, we have an Exclusive Mix & Story from none other than Nicky Romero himself! Nicky reflects on what reaching the milestone means and focuses in on some of the five year anniversary special releases – we get an inside look at Tony Romera’s remix of “Symphonica” and his own remix of iconic StadiumX track “Howl At The Moon.” He also shares his favorite release on the label and the special feeling that hosting label events, such as the Protocol Stage at Balaton Sound this week [event page], have given him!
Five years of Protocol releases and 250 episodes of Protocol Radio, just wow! For you what’s been one of your biggest challenges reaching this point with the label and show? What do you feel is one of your key strengths that has enabled your success?
Our biggest challenge was trying to build the label independently without any help or influence from any other labels. We learned as we went along what identity we wanted the label to have and how we wanted to present ourselves. It wasn’t always easy and it was a lot of of hard work, but I am really proud that we have gotten so far and are already at our 5th anniversary. We have a dedicated team, a strong brand, a great roster and a loyal fanbase. I think our strength lies in this and that we aim to release the highest quality dance music available.
Tony Romera remixed one of your first Protocol releases “Iron,” and now has remixed “Symphonica” as part of the five year celebration. What has having him as a part of the Protocol family meant to you and what do you like in particular about his music?
It is really great having Tony with us on Protocol, he has had so many varied releases on other acclaimed labels so it’s a delight to have him join us. He is a wizard in the studio too, we can give him anything to remix and he churns out magic and adds that French touch to it.
You’ve also traded remixes with the StadiumX guys for two of the most iconic Protocol tracks, so did you feel any added pressure remixing “Howl At The Moon”? What do you like about the guys’ remix of “Like Home”?
That was a fun trade off, you guys do one of mine and I do one of yours! StadiumX are great guys and really good producers, so of course I had pressure on me, they had already made a fantastic track! But they loved my new take on the song so it was all good! I loved their version of “Like Home,” they kept the origin of the song intact, but gave it all a fresh feel and new catchy twist.
“Rip It Up,” “Lift,” “HEX,” “Moloko” – so many incredible tracks from a diverse group of A-list artists. Are there a few tracks and/or artists that you are particularly proud of having had released on Protocol?
That’s a hard one for me, because they are all my friends and have all delivered fantastic tracks in their own right. The thing with Protocol Recordings is that we aim to release music of the highest quality that we believe our fans would want to hear. But if I had to choose one track that I’m particularly proud of, it would be “Like Home.” It’s personally one of my favourites and, as one of our earliest successes, was the one that really launched Protocol and gave us further support. I also have to give a shout out to “Howl At The Moon,” which was particularly special as it was the first non-Protocol release to achieve platinum status.
You’ve also taken Protocol to another dimension with your Protocol events, always a highlight during ADE and MMW, and this year you guys have your own stage at Balaton Sound. What does being able to curate and provide a platform for your choice talent mean to you? What are you looking for to most about the event in Hungary?
It’s hugely important for us – we really started exploring the idea of Protocol events during the Miami and ADE showcases, then it gained momentum as we started performing at more events around the world like Tomorrowland Brazil, Daydream and Sziget. We love showcasing our roster to our fans on one stage – it’s like having your own private party with all of your friends! We had an amazing time at Sziget last year, so we’re really excited to get to Balaton Sound and go even bigger.
What does the future hold in store for Protocol? Any artists or music that we should be particularly on the lookout for?
A lot of new music! We’re really championing all of our artists and encouraging their creativity. The latest Sam Void releases and the Blinders EP (released last week) are great examples of this. But besides exploring new sounds, fans can always expect to keep hearing those typical Protocol club bangers.
In case you missed it we have Exclusive Mixes and Stories from Blinders, Raiden, MAXIMALS, and Sam Void as part of our 5 years of Protocol celebration!
