We caught up with Valentino Khan at Electric Zoo to recap his 2016 thus far following up on the massive success of “Deep Down Low.” He discusses his collaborations with Skrillex and Wiwek and reveals some of the IDs in his sets.
“Deep Down Low” - #1 song from 2015 with artist support now at nearly 800 tracklists. What has it been like for you this year coming off of the success of that track?
It’s been amazing for me. It’s one thing for your fans to appreciate it, which is really great, but it’s really meaningful when my peers are playing a song and knowing that they like it. That kind of respect means a lot to me.
Were there any artists that surprised you to be playing it?
Axwell Λ Ingrosso were the first to take it to a different world. Primarily bass music artists and the people I had given it to were playing it until that point. I guess they head “Deep Down Low” and wanted to play it at Ultra. Once they played it at Ultra, it branched off into this whole new world of guys like Calvin Harris, Afrojack, Avicii and all these other guys. That was definitely a huge moment. Major Lazer also play a VIP of “Deep Down Low” in their sets and have a whole dance routine with drums which is really sick.
What was it like doing a collaboration with Skrillex and how did “Slam Dunk” come to be?
It was dope. “Slam Dunk” was a bit of a long process. Some of it was over the internet and some we did in the top floor of a hotel room in Korea. It finally came together and we wrapped it up and got it out.
That was dope too. We had just talked about working with each other for a while and he happened to be in LA one day and we worked on it there and finished the rest online. We just wanted to make a really hard house track.
Obviously our site is all about IDs, so let’s talk about them. One you usually play with the “Wild For The Night” Acapella and with Kayzo’s remix of “Boss Mode.” Can you tell us anything about this ID?
I can’t tell you who it’s by, but I know the exact song you’re talking about! It’s not my song, I’ll give you that much. It’s one of the craziest dubstep records I’ve heard in a long time. I love playing it.
What about the one with the Snappy Jit vocal?
That’s Juyen Selbulba’s song, though it was incorrectly ID’d for a while. It’s always funny to me how people try to guess. Sometimes they guess right, weirdly, but a lot of the time they guess wrong.
How about the track that you mix with Party Favor - “Bust ‘Em”?
I can tell you about that one! It’s a new thing from Laidback Luke. Juyen’s on that track too as well as Shelco Garcia & Teenwolf. It’s sick.
Is there any upcoming music from you that you can tell us about?
I have a bunch of unfinished records in progress that are semi-playable. I’m going to mess around today with some of them, some of which I may or may not play. It depends on how finished I think they are. It’s always great to test the new ones out and see how the crowd reacts.
Is there anything special for you about playing at a Buygore stage?
The special part is that it’s all of my homies over there. GTA, Borgore, Getter, I’m really looking forward to watching Juicy J which will be dope over there. Lil Dicky too who’s fucking tight. He seems like a real smart dude. That “Save That Money” video is really brilliant.
